Generic Zoloft is widely known as a remedy for treatment of initial or chronic episodes of depression. This antidepressant has sertraline as its active material. The latter does not cause drug dependence or body weight increase (after long-term taking).
The active material has little influence on the reuptake of norepinephrine and dopamine. When taken in therapeutic doses, it blocks 5-hydroxytryptamine reuptake in human platelets. It has no stimulatory, sedative or anticholinergic effect. Thanks to the selective inhibition of thrombotonin, this material does not intensify the adrenergic activity.
When doctors prescribe sertraline
There are some illnesses that are often treated with this medication
- Panic disorders (including the cases with agoraphobia)
- Obsessive-compulsive disorders
- Posttraumatic depressive disorders
- Depressions with manic states
- Social phobia
- Depressions with apprehensive feelings
Generic Zoloft may be also used as a preparation for recurrence prophylaxis.
The inhibition of 5-hydroxytryptamine reuptake increases the serotonergic transmission, which results in the consequent inhibition of adrenoceptive activity in the locus coeruleus. Zoloft also inhibits the stimulation of serotonin neurons in and around the midline of myelencephalon, which leads to the initial increase in locus coeruleus activity with subsequent decrease in the activity of postsynaptic beta-adrenergic receptors and presynaptic alpha-2 adrenergic receptors.
This pharmaceutical does not cause drug dependency. There is no awareness-inducing, sedative, anticholinergic, and cardiotoxic effect; psychomotor activity is not changed. Sertraline also does not increase the activity of sympathetic nervous system due to the selective inhibition of serotonin reuptake.
The initial effect is developing for 7 days, the full one requires 2-4 weeks.
