Ambien is a sleep-inducing drug of imidazopyridine group. Considering its efficiency, it as an analogue of benzodiazepine, which has a very short half-life (approximately 2 hours) and is not a source of pharmacologically active metabolites.
The generic name of the drug is zolpidem, which is included in compositions of different modern soporific medications. At the present time, it is the most widespread somnifacient in the USA and Europe.
There are some reports claiming that this drug yield a paradoxical effect on patients in some comatose states, when people are conscious, but cannot move or eat. The use of the pharmaceutical was followed by a temporary motor activity rehabilitation, right up to the possibility of eating and walking.
Generic Ambien is available without prescription. Nevertheless, it is always better to consult a doctor before taking the sleeping medicine.
Important information and precautions
Ambien is characterized by its soporific and relaxant effects. It is widely used as a treatment for sleep disturbances, such as:
- Inability of falling asleep
- Often nighttime awakenings
- Early morning awakenings
The drug is intended for a long-term use. As a rule, it is 7-10 days; long-term use is permitted only under the medical control.
Before taking the medicine, share the information with your doctor if you suffer any of the following:
- Renal diseases
- Liver diseases
- Alcohol or drug dependency
- Emphysema, bronchitis, asthma, or any other respiratory disease
- Feeling of depression or suicidal thoughts

You should not take generic Ambien if you suffer:

- Severe liver impairment

Children and teenagers under 15 should not take zolpidem.

Pregnancy and lactogenesis:
The drug is contraindicated during the first trimester of pregnancy. You may take the medication only in minimal doses during the third trimester, because there is a possibility of developing arterial hypotension after increased benzodiazepine (or similar preparations) usage.
